Does it violate a POV convention to narrate your character's name before they know what it is? (i.e. amnesia) So, the reader knows, but the character has to be told later, say in the third scene.

Should I instead rely on stuff like "the man woke up" instead of "Joe woke up"?

I'm sure I've heard that Dave doesn't like stories that start with unnamed characters, or ones where they are waking up.

Every submission is another chance to win the contest so give it your best and don't press your luck.

That being said though, the idea does sound intriguing.

In a situation like this, I'd honestly recommend using first person perspective rather than third person perspective. It'll be easier to manage because then the protagonist is "I".

@writingdude Good suggestion, and great sarcasm! Smile I have three characters in my cliche, each with a name. I'm dropping the amnesia aspect, so the original question is not immediately relevant, though still interesting to me. But there is a setting-based reason for the characters to each have a second name. I'm starting the narration using those new names even though they are not explained until scene three when one character hears it for the first time.

Maybe your character discovers his true name, which is different from his given name.
