I’ve been working on a project to study the differences between human-written and AI-generated text, and I’ve tested a few detection tools so far—Originality.AI, Turnitin’s AI detection, QuillBot’s AI checker, GPTZero, as well as MyEssayWriter.ai’s and PerfectEssayWriter.ai’s detectors.

What I’ve noticed is that results vary a lot depending on the length of the text and how much editing it’s gone through. Short texts seem to confuse all of them, and sometimes a completely human-written paragraph still gets flagged as AI. On the flip side, AI-written content that’s been paraphrased can often pass as human.

From your experience, is there one tool you’ve found to be consistently more reliable? Or do you think using multiple detectors together is the only safe approach?

In late July I read an article that had been written in early July comparing AI detectors.  Using a ChatGPT-generated story, I tried out two of the detectors that the writer rated as 100% reliable.  One was certain the story was human written, and the other was 85% sure.  So I wouldn't believe it if anybody told me any of them was reliable.  I think the AI detection "arms war" is stacked against us such that honest writers and editors who want honest writers are screwed.

Though that pretty much excepts humor - AI is still terrible at writing that, so a human can easily tell.
