2007 • Volume 23

The California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, California, is a fitting venue for a science fiction awards event, since Albert Einstein had an office there. Before the 2007 ceremonies, the winners, judges and their guests participated in an extensive tour of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory robotics lab and the Mars Science Laboratory Project, where they were treated to demonstrations of new space-probe prototypes, Mars rovers and advances in robotics.

The twenty-third annual Awards ceremony was held on Friday, August 24, 2007, in the beautiful outdoor setting of the Caltech Athenaeum. Actresses Lee Purcell and Carina Ricco were celebrity presenters. Charles N. Brown of Locus magazine received the L. Ron Hubbard Lifetime Achievement Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Arts. Following the ceremony, a large reception and book signing for the winners took place inside the Caltech Athenaeum.

Year in the Contests

The judges for this year are named on the cover of this book. And, as has been true since the beginning of the Contests, these professionals comprise many of today’s top names in the fields of science fiction and fantasy literature and art.

This year, we are proud to welcome on board as our latest judges, Rebecca Moesta for the Writers of the Future and Stephan Martiniere for the Illustrators of the Future.

Rebecca is author of thirty science fiction and fantasy novels, writing for all ages from children to young adult to adult. She has also co-authored several books with her husband and Contest judge, Kevin J. Anderson.

Stephan has won multiple awards for his illustration and animation including the British Science Fiction Association Award for Best Cover in 2004, the Chesley Award for best hardcover in 2006 and the Thea Award for his work in the Paramount theme park in 2001.
