Born in 1975, Hugh fell in love with reading and with sailing at a young age. He had two dreams in life: to write a novel and to sail around the world. In 2009, he finally completed his first novel. His seventh published work, Wool, became an international bestseller and has been translated into nearly 40 languages.
His career as a writer has taken him all around the world; he has met amazing readers everywhere he goes, and he has seen some extraordinary places. Now he’s embarking on a journey to complete his second dream, that of sailing around the world.
Hugh Howey became a Writers of the Future judge in 2023.
“I’m honored and delighted to be invited to judge L. Ron Hubbard’s Writers of the Future, a contest with a storied history and noble purpose. Breaking out as a new writer has never been easy, and one of the thrills of being an established author is to help give encouragement and support to those who are on that journey right behind us.” —Hugh Howey
