@wulfmoon I appreciate that! I definitely intend on going through the Online Workshop soon, after I finish my current craft-related read (Becoming a Writer, Staying a Writer by J Michael Straczynski). I welcome each and every chance to soak up advice on writing, even if I end up disagreeing with it. Actually, especially if I disagree with it—in a weird way, it better helps refine my understanding of how and why I write. But I suspect that I’ll find more good advice than poor if the names attached to the Workshop are anything to go by!

Hi I'm Jessie, and I will admit I am new to writing. However recently I found out about this contest though Dragon Con, and I ended up buying Volume 39. I been really enjoying reading the stories and it made me want to try writing my own!

I'm looking forward to discussing writing with you all!

@jessie-b welcome to the forums! The anthologies are awesome Never too early or too late to try your own hand at writing.

How was dragoncon? I've only made it to boskone, worldcon and readercon so far myself, but each have their own flavor.

@gideonpsmith It was a lot of fun! It was my first time going to a large con like that, but I had a fun time going to panels and exploring the markets and art galleries! I highly suggest going, though plan way ahead cause getting a hotel in the city is nearly impossible by the time the con rolls around.

Remember that those winning writers have been honing their skills for years and most of them have been entering the contest for a long time before winning.  Write, have fun, explore the forum's wealth of knowledge, and don't be afraid to reach out for assistance.

Hi to everyone, I'm new here! I thought since it's my first time submitting to the writers of the future contest, I could try this too. It's my first time on a Forum in general. I learned about this by watching one of Brandon Sanderson's YouTube lectures and I love that this contest is a thing. I'm hoping for the best.

The forum is full of free advice (most very helpful ). The participants are very helpful.  This is the only forum I've stuck with for more than a week. Explore, have fun, keep writing, and submit whenever possible.

This contest helped Brandon Sanderson keep going at a critical juncture in his writing, and that was only with an HM! Imagine what it might do for you!

Hello, 

I just got introduced to the contest and the forum by an old friend of mine, himself a long time if not particularily successful writer like me.  I entered something I had and got an HM the first time out, which was nice.  I've been writing since I was a kid but just recently got into it more seriously. Or should I say, with more devotion of time and effort, because a lot of my early stuff was far too serious looking back at it! I also just recently branched into sci fi and fantasy and now am finding myself over run with ideas, if not the time to do anything with them.  

Anyway, it's been fun so far and I am grateful for the community of writers out there. Good luck to us all.

Welcome, Gavin. HM is a very good start. Take one of those many ideas and make some time to craft it into a great short story. There's still time to submit for this quarter.

@allorch It's true about advice. In a world where I had tons of time, I'd make a podcast all about opinions on craft. For every writing "truth", there is an equal and opposite counterbalance of what is also possible and true. I love that about writing. Welcome to the Forum!

Howdy!  New to the group.  20 years ago, I wanted nothing more than to be a writer.  Not long after that, my best friend read one of my first drafts.  In no uncertain terms, he declared it "trash" but didn't offer anything constructive.  It was a book I was working on and about 10,000 words into it.  I lost interest in writing and he ghosted me not long after that.  He's only partially to blame, but as a "fine art" painter, I expected a little more appreciation of "first draft" or sketch shortfalls.  Since then I have been enthralled with my navel in philosophical obsession which I have found to be a soul-sucking endeavor.  A new friend has re-ignited my desire to write so I'm here to pick up where I left off 20 years ago... determined to be published in WotF!

I now live on a farm in rural Tennessee, not far from Nashville where the peace, quiet, visual beauty and abundant local artistic talent is most inspiring for a renewed relationship with my word processor.  I look forward to being a member of the WotF community!
