"Never self reject."

I say it all the time. I believe it, strongly.

But sometimes you just can't lie to yourself about whether your story fits the theme. When the guidelines call for a warm, happy ending and your story ends with the protagonist spending months locked up with his crazy stalker, that's not a fit. Not even if it's funny.

Definitely important to keep market guidelines in mind, yeah. I'm always especially careful to check formatting requirements, because most places prefer Shunn but not all, and I like to get that right.

If you are in difficulties with a book, try the element of surprise: attack it at an hour when it isn't expecting it. ~ H.G. Wells
If a person offend you, and you are in doubt as to whether it was intentional or not, do not resort to extreme measures; simply watch your chance and hit him with a brick. ~ Mark Twain
