Yikes! Thanks, Martin. Over the last decade or so that I've been writing, I've discovered that the more desperate someone is to just get published, the more susceptible they become to getting scammed. Money should always flow TO the writer. Self-publishing is a viable route, and it's true you likely will pay for things like cover designs (support local artists!) and editing services (from legitimate editors). But there are so many free services out there, no one should ever feel the need to dive into shark-infested waters just to sell their work.
Writers block is when your imaginary friends stop talking to you.

There are times I search for something using the exact name (because I don't know the exact URL) and that thing I am searching for is not the top listing - because of a paid ad. So I second PDBlake's comment, and augment with don't automatically click the top option. It may not be the website you're looking for.

Thanks for posting this! I've had run-ins with a few vanity people, and have seen some other local writers really get screwed over by them in the past. It especially hurts when people take advantage of you with writing, as it's such an intimate part of yourself, too. Thanks again for the info. Always helps to be aware.
