OK, I promised to do this last night; but in between, I unexpectedly ended up with a ten mile walk to fight cancer, a grocery shopping expedition, a couch shopping expedition, and a visit with relatives from out of town. Then when I finally thought I was settled in for the night, my mom had me call 911 due to possible pancreatitis. So now I'm posting this from the hospital.
So my messed-up life aside, this is our first call for loglines and reviewers. Dustin sent us this great link teaching about loglines, which can be useful both as a way to sell a finished story and also as a way to think through a story in progress. Quoting Dustin:
According to the site, there's three important elements needed for a good logline:
who the story is about (protagonist)
what he strives for (goal)
what stands in his way (antagonistic force).…
This may be elementary stuff to some of you vets, but for me was a real "light bulb over the head" moment.
Thus, I wanted to share with others, in case other light bulbs might be lit up.
Suggestions:
Write a logline for your written story.
Write a logline for your future stories.
If you don't outline, just logline.
And from the article he linked: loglines should be short. A sentence is best, two sentences are OK. They should describe a character actively facing a problem, not just some coincidental events. The article gives a lot more tips, and I strongly recommend reading it. Again, I can't thank Dustin enough.
So what we're looking for is your loglines and people to review them. In keeping with the forum's rules for critiques, DO NOT POST YOUR LOGLINES HERE!!!!! Submit them to me via PM. If you're willing to review, either post here or PM me. I'll take loglines and review volunteers until midnight tomorrow night contest time (i.e., PDT). Then I'll PM the reviewers with what I have, and collect the reviews at a later point.
Loglines can be submitted anonymously or not. Critiques can be submitted anonymously or not. If you don't explicitly tell me otherwise, I will assume anonymous. All communications will be via PM on the forum.
Be honest in your critiques, but not mean. When you receive a critique and you don't like it, smile and nod and ignore it.

I'm in.
One thing I'll mention is, Tina and I already went back and forth once on our lines.
I wrote 480 words in response to her logline.
This is not to say anyone else has to go berserk like that, just that I might...

Yes, it can take a lot of words to discuss a few number of words. Analyses of poetry is one example.
Due to another excellent suggestion from Dustin, I'm extending the deadline to the end of the month (i.e., April 30) so that more people are likely to see and participate. We have two submissions so far (plus mine, when I get around to it), so there's room for more.
I originally wanted to manage the flood by restricting each submitter to one per week. I don't see a flood yet, so feel free to submit multiple loglines. If we get overwhelmed, then we can worry about a limit.

I've got a logline and I'll submit it shortly. Also I want to review. And Martin, I hope your mom is on the mend and out of the hospital soon.
Tina
Thanks, all! Mom isn't doing great, but at least she has painkillers now so she's not hurting. If this goes like her last bout of pancreatitis, she's facing 6 days of no food and water while the condition settles down.
As for loglines, I should add: these need not be your contest ideas, since you might not decide what will be a contest entry until later. I know I usually don't. I'm half tempted to submit a couple of loglines for non-speculative stories, just because they're sitting in my Idea Pile and whispering, "Me, too..."

OK, I'm way behind schedule. Mom's still in the hospital, though we hope she's coming home today. And I'm waiting for movers to arrive to pick up a couch. And work is a pain. And there are work-related issues I can't discuss (yet). And the logjam in my brain just unjammed on my novel after a two-year stall.
So I haven't sent out the loglines yet. Sending them out tonight. Still time to take some more if anyone's interested.

OK, loglines have gone out. If you thought you were participating and you haven't received a PM from me, it means I'm a doofus, and you have to remind me.
Thanks!

I'm about halfway through reviewing the loglines. I'm now working on the Martin submissions!

Dumb question here. Are the critiques supposed to be aimed towards the logistics of the logline or whether or not the story concept sounds intriguing/plausible? Or both?
I've never done logline critiques before, so I'm feeling a bit at sea.

A little of both, I would say. Any comment that you think could be helpful or encouraging.

Just sent my reviews. Awesome loglines everyone!
Thanks, Tina! And as a reminder: I'm making everything anonymous unless someone specifically requests otherwise. Dustin has and Strycher has; and Tina, you implied it, so please let me know if I misunderstood.

OK, my brain is a bit frazzled, but I think I just sent the reviews out to everybody. If you don't see a PM from me and you're expecting one, please let me know.
Advice for next time: anonymity was a bit more hassle than it was worth. No one specifically requested it; but I promised it unless asked otherwise, so I followed through. But next time I would say anonymity only if specifically requested. Or maybe no anonymity at all. There was a lot of busy-work involved here. No sense adding to it.
Thanks to all who participated!

Thanks Martin!
It was nice to be able to see everyone reviews and how a lot of them were similar. Seeing them all lined up together really did make it easier to see the patterns in what people liked and what needed improvement on the idea of the story.
Tina
Nice job. That looked like a lot of work. I think I'll submit a log line or two next time, if you do it again. Let us know if there's anything we can do to make it easier on you.
Martin,
Thanks for compiling all the loglines and sending PM's to everyone.
Good show!
