The last time I wrote science fiction, AI was science fiction. Okay, it wasn't that long ago, but the WotF contest rules weren't disallowing it either. So, my question is at what point does AI use constitute "AI Generated" stories? Follow up question: how can we be assured that the work we submit isn't competing with AI generated stories? In theory, at some point soon, AI will be indistinguishable from human-generated stories if it isn't already there.
I don't doubt many AI generated stories are submitted to the contest, but we're not competing against them. They're not competition: they're easily identifiable, and even if they weren't, they're not *good*. At least, not right now. Who you're competing against are the best of the best, many of whom are here in these forums. My advice is to advocate strongly and loudly against AI plagiarism (because that's what it is, by and large, at least when it comes to writing fiction) but otherwise not to worry about it: worry about writing the best story you can.

Are AI generated stories allowed? I couldn't see anything in the rules to say one way or the other.
ETA: My dodgy old eyes are getting worse. It's in rule number 3. They are not allowed.

@pdblake Very much not allowed, and neither is AI "art" (although that wasn't in the rules last year, it was brought up in at least one Finalist's first phone call and resulted in a gentle disqualification).

I believe an AI story would be one generated entirely by AI. Using AI to conduct research, brainstorm worlds or characters or whatever, or using it to proofread is probably okay - you're using it the way you might use Google but with a more interactive element. Just don't let it actually write your story, as you can always tell when it has written your story.
