I couldn’t find any previous posts on this, hoping somebody knows.

If someone with a pen name wins, is the pen name or the legal name announced, or can the person choose?

The simple answer is they’ll use your pen name.

The trickier answer is that the pen name is more significant to you than to them, so you’ll need to double check in everything and sometimes remind them. Your contracts and payments will be in your legal name. Your interaction with the judges and staff will be whichever name you choose. So people may forget.

If it matters to you, double check.

SFWA Membership and Contest Participation

Word just arrived and I'm now a full member of SFWA. For those who haven't kept up with the Association's criteria, it's no longer about 3 "pro-rates" sales (like the Contest has it) but about at total sales of $1000.

But I do have 3 "pro-rates" sales and the last one put me (just barely) over the 1 grand limit (I concentrate on the short stuff, what can I tellya?)

So, while the contest would still allow me to enter ("no more than 3" being the wording of the rules, I believe) I feel that being a member of a professional organization goes rather counter to the spirit of the contest and I think I shouldn't enter in the coming 1st quarter.

If I did, it would be within days of Oct 1, to get in before any possible 4th pro-rates sale. But I just feel like it might leave a bad taste in some mouths were I (against all odds) to take a winning spot.

Does anyone know of another case like mine or have an opinion on the subject? I welcome feedback from administrators, site moderators or any member with an opinion.

@angelslayah My opinion, for what it's worth, is if you're still eligible for the contest by the stated rules, go ahead and enter.  Good luck to you either winning or earning your 4th pro sale.

@angelslayah my answer is always the same on these - ask Joni. She governs those rules so she's the final arbiter. Ask her, she's very nice.

@angelslayah I say go ahead and enter as long as you're still eligible. If you get your fourth pro sale before results come out, you can always withdraw (as Gideon mentions, you can always consult with Joni about eligibility.)

Have you received a lot of Finalist and Semi-Finalist certificates from the contest in the past? If you've been that close to winning several times, and you do end up finally winning the quarter, and you do get a fourth pro sale that disqualifies you, again, you can always withdraw, which would allow another Finalist to slip into your spot for the quarter. No harm, no foul. But that's an awful lot of "if's" to overcome first.

I just realized that I think I misread the guidelines for the digital submissions.  I read it as needing the title in the document, and page numbers.  Now that I've submitted, I'm starting to think they wanted a header with the title and page number, so the title's on every page too... Is this an automatic DQ?

I just want to know if I should plan on re-submitting this (correctly) for the next quarter, or just focus on a new story.  I plan on working on a new story anyway... but if I'm going to have to resubmit, I'd want to spend some more time on this story as well.  Just make sure it's extra polished for next time.

Hello Hanna and welcome to the forum! Please see rule number #6 here: https://writersofthefuture.com/contest-rules-writers/

Entries submitted electronically must be double-spaced and must include the title of the work and page number on each page, but do not include the author’s name. The first time an entrant logs to electronically upload their entry, they will provide the author’s legal name, pen name if applicable, address, telephone number, e-mail address, and approximate word count. The author’s name and/or any contact information must not be included on the story manuscript itself to facilitate fair, anonymous judging. If the author’s name and/or any contact information is included on the story manuscript, it will be disqualified. To submit your entry electronically, go to: www.writersofthefuture.com/enter-writer-contest and follow the instructions.

Please email me at [email protected] with your submission title and the email you used for your account, and I can help give you direction on what to do.
