So after I got the original HM, a year ago, I submitted the piece to a pro magazine. I didn't get in, obviously, but the editor kindly took a minute to tell me where he had faltered in the story. This is super rare and when it happens, you listen! Anyway he pointed to where his attention had flagged and I realized he was right, I took too long on atmosphere and on the initial hook and didn't get to the meat of the story fast enough. It was already a short (for me, it's about 5k words) story, so I was surprised when I pulled out 600 words as easily as I did. It really tightened things up though.
The other change just had to do with making the crucial moral decision just a bit more stark. You'll have to read the story in next year's anthology to see how that worked! This one is meant to make you cry, but cheer at the same time.

Thanks Galen! I hope you'll love it - it's in the same universe as my V32 story, but not a love story like that one. I also hope you'll be excited to hear that I'm currently turning my V32 story into an epic series. I'm closing in on a first draft of Part 1 (of, oh, a dozen or so. It's going to take multiple stories to get to where the V32 story occurs). So stay tuned!
Since I'm plugging myself, I've had a couple stories published since. I have one that's in the same universe (though it's hard to tell unless you know) published in Deep Magic Summer 2019. It's a love story (spoilers!) called His Lady's Favor, and it didn't count toward my pro-ing out because it was too long and therefore not paid at professional rates. And I have a free story up at Abyss & Apex right now, "The Eyes of Hemshat", which is the piece I wrote at the WOTF workshop back in V32! It's not my same universe (which I need a name for, I call them "bear stories" but not all of them actually have bear warriors) but I think it's got some splendid worldbuilding. Also didn't count toward pro-ing out since, again, over their word cap for pro rates.
