I'm close for Q1. Going to sleep on it and polish a little more tomorrow (or later today at this point 😜). Had to pull my Q2 forward and push my original Q1 back to Q2 because a rewrite was taking longer than planned. zzzzzz

And I wouldn't fuss with the attribution - I just commented as its such a great quote and I think the history on its interesting

In for Q1. I had a story ready to go a month ago but honestly I'd been debating whether to even submit this quarter up until an hour ago. The critical voice is a weird, berating beast. But it's back in the cage for now.
Good luck, everyone!

I'm happy you submitted. You never know what place your story could've gotten if you didn't actually enter.

Now, on to Q2. I say, "get to writing!" 😆

I'm in for Q1! As usual, I submitted on the last day, but I spent more time on this story than I have on many of my recent entries, so we'll see if that makes a difference Smile

The critical voice is indeed a weird, berating beast, and oft raises its head *after* submission too if you are anything like me Smile good luck, both with the submission and keeping the beast tame for the coming months!

Well, I originally put my entries in there to encourage others to not give up after a few, but I'm not sure the logic still holds after this many giggle

I’m in for Q1. It’s not one of the stories I outlined this quarter, but that’s okay. I wrote it for WotF a long time ago then talked myself out of submitting it in favor of something else. Next quarter, I promise to finish a new story!

V40: SHM, HM, SHM, HM
V41: HM, SHM, SHM, F

I'm in. New story - High Fantasy - 11k words

Two weeks of outlining. Ten days of writing.

I haven't re-submitted a story in a long time. For me, it is largely due to the fact that I keep thinking up new things. There are three universes that I play in and these generate unending story ideas.

I would suggest creating a reference file for world/universe building that includes everything that differentiates that universe from RL. (For instance, my main magical universe has a huge number of rules that define and constrain magic and these things are all written out in an outline. I add definition and detail to the outline as each story tests the rules.) My reference files have drastically lowered prep time before writing.

Advantages of resubbing that I believe in:

1. Using new techniques on an older story allows the writer to practice on familiar ground.

2. Resubbing after reworking (removing extraneous elements, creating more immersive prose, increasing flow, etc.) may show tangible improvement as the story might place higher.

3. The change made to the story might be the exact change that was required.

Advantages that I don't believe in:

1. The reader was having a bad day and the next time they see the story, it will "click."

2. Reader A rejected my story but this time reader B will like it.

Best of luck to everyone who entered.

Have fun.

And also because you can't because you keep making finalist? 😉

If there is anyone on here for whom the win seems inevitable my money would be on you. Best of luck with this quarter!

Interesting. All my stories are unrelated. What is your long term plan for these same-world sstories? Do you submit them elsewhere or do you plan an anthology/fix-up novel sometime? Or is it just because thats whats efficient/fun for you?

Agree 100% with this - and I'd double down on the resubbing changes probably have to be significant, not just tweaks. Thanks for these thoughts @kent always interesting to hear other people's reasoning and process whether writing or the contest.

@gideonpsmith

I have submitted most WotF entries elsewhere, though there are a few larger ones that have no market, currently. I have kicked around the idea of compiling same universe stories into an anthology, but believe that would be putting the cart before the horse (i.e. Kent has a brand new anthology! ... Who?).

One thing I'll add, ideas outside of my developed universes get written up as is, never shoehorned into a preexisting universe just to fit.

Thank you for the kind words,

Kent
