Hey, all,
Just a reminder that the contest does not allow simultaneous submissions. If you submit a story to the contest, it's supposed to stay with us and only us until you get your results back. Yes, you can withdraw a story if you decide you'd rather submit it somewhere else, and yes, sometimes people withdraw a story if they've sim subbed and sold it. The latter of those two is actually against the rules, and the former is a hassle and time-waster for Joni and the judging team.
Two people this quarter would have been finalists if they had just waited a bit longer before submitting their stories elsewhere. Grats to them for selling their stories, but they lost a real chance at winning and added another notch toward pro-ing out.
I know the wait is frustrating. Think carefully about what you want. If you'd rather sell to X magazine than win the contest, then submit to X magazine first. If you'd rather win the contest, don't submit elsewhere until after judging is over.
Cheers!
Kary

Well, this makes perfect sense for the Contest, of course!

Yeah, I've sim-subbed to a lot of markets, including many who say not to (sorry not sorry), but I'd never do it to the contest. You know the contest is going to tell you your result at a particular time (some magazines never even get back to me!) and it's the biggest reward in the industry.

I don't sim-sub even if they allow it. It gets confusing enough when you have over a dozen stories out at a time.
I tend to submit and forget. If it takes a while I'm writing something else while I'm waiting.

I agree about not sim-submitting.
I'm using Duotrope now to help with submission tracking and to find markets.

I also do not and would not think of sim-subbing to the Contest. Other markets are fair game if they allow it.
