I got a Finalist. I got a new job starting next week. I got a bunch of new Facebook friends. I got new friends here. I sold a copy of the Lounge today AND a copy of "The Mother Anthony". What more prize could I ask for today?

(Well, an acceptance from Analog, but...)

It's been a looooong time and a lot of pounds since anyone called me "little". But maybe if I keep on the treadmill, I can come close...

Also did anyone else notice that our new member and Finalist, Holly, is also a talented illustrator? Well, if Holly comes back on she can tell us if she's been submitting to the illustration side...

And if not... WHY NOT?!?!?

Thanks Tina and Martin! No, I haven't submitted to the illustration side, those skills aren't quite up to snuff yet. Yet, mind you. Smile

Congratulations, Martin, Tina, and Marina! And to everyone else, as well. Bravo! (Anyone else notice how if you take the first three letters of Martin's name, and connect them to the last three of Tina's name, you get Marina? Eerie! There's only one explanation: they must each be a single incarnation or unit within a larger interstellar android hivemind. Well played, Martinamarina, well played.)

Amazing...how can I not cheer on these 3 now? Plus I want Tina to win so I can hear her hillarious tale about almost missing the deadline in her acceptance speech. I also want Marina to win 1st so klaatu's dream comes true (anyone else remember this prediction back in January!)

We do have Illustrator winners on here who would be happy to guide you. We've collected a lot of information on "how to win" -- like that the illustration should tell a story, ect. Scott (soulmirror) gave me critique once, because I've been slowly putting together an entry.

I think we were the first on this board to take a plunge in critiquing along with Michael and for that I’m internally grateful.

I'm glad that your organs like me. wotf008

Seriously though, I'm bad about sentimentality, so I'll just say that I'm very proud of you for making Finalist. And I'm still waiting on chapter 2 of that novel . . .

And then there was this on the next page. Damn, man. Is that when you realized it?

Yes. Exactly then. It was a sobering moment.

To be put in the "finalist for sure pile" by KD before she died is an honor. You were meant to be there.

Yes, this.

Yay! double posting.

It's cool, Tina. I had a dream last night that I was at the awards ceremony and you won first place. wotf011

Also, since there were so many folks that I was rooting for who got Finalist this time I was a little over excited and my spouse asks me: "So . . . Should I be jealous of your internet friends?" wotf019

Congrats again MarTinaMarina!

Thanks, Beez! It's still possible for all 3 winners to be non-forumites. I'm sure Hazlett could add some mathematical rigor to that statement.

Assuming that 5 of the finalists are "forumites", the probability that exactly 3 winners will be non-forumites is exactly 1.7857%.

Here's how the math shakes out.

The total number of distinct permutations of k people in a group of n people is = n! / (n-k)!. Therefore, in a group 8 people, there are 336 distinct permutations of 3 people. 336 becomes our denominator.

The total number of distinct permutations of 3 people in a group of 3 people is 6. 6 becomes our numerator.

Hence the probability of non-forumites winning is 1.7857%, which incidentally is the same probability that "well-known" forumites like Martin, Tina, and Marina win together.

Congrats Martin, Tina, and Marina!

Congrats to Holly and Jeremy as well. As you can see, I included you both the "forumite" camp.

Congrats to the 3 non-forumites as well!

My work is done here. wotf009

I'd love to have it all turn around and this be my year for luck, but so far today I've not seen any gumdrops falling from the sky...so I hope results do not come today.

A bunch of amazing math.

My work is done here. wotf009

(Of course, one could also argue that the statistical probability likely has nothing at all to do with the actual results, given that we're talking about judges' preferences, etc., etc., etc. but... still. Headexplodey.)

This ties in well with my hope that the judges will declare a three-way tie for first. wotf001

Wow! I get a new job and go away for a day and have ten new pages to read when I get back!

Congrats to all the finalists (Especially Martin, Tina, Marina, Holly, and Jeremy)...

...and for reaching (and surpassing) 100 pages...

...and for getting Martin to come back in a blaze of glory.

Much excitement all around!

Thanks again all!

Btw, Martinis are my favorite.

Ah, dreams galore! Perhaps they'll all come true some way, some how? (If I remember correctly, Steve thought it *might* have been me. Could have been Tina--or maybe Holly? wotf007 )

We shal beat the odds, I say! <img src="{wotf}:wotf024:

We kinda look alike....except you're a super hot bridal model (Facebook picture) and I'm sitting cross-eyed at some fountain in San Francisco. Kary will be the only one to verify if I *really* have cross-eyes.

I also need to get my original avatar back.

And, Oh, I forgot to comment on Krystal's post about internal vs eternal....guess some dogs will never learn the new tricks.
