Er . . . Hope I didn't sound snobby. "Homecoming" made my get all weepy, so I've been looking for an excuse to repost it.

I've stopped worrying about it. It makes me jumpy.

To be fair, I didn't know who a lot of these guys were either. I've never been much of a fan of some of the deep genre stuff, well, not until I started writing seriously.

I didn't actually read any of Mike Resnick's stuff until after I started entering in the contest. Though I read his daughter's fantasy trilogy IN LEGEND BORN when I was in high school and loved it. Might be my favorite fantasy books. I don't consume fantasy in print very often, but Laura Resnick knows how to keep me interested.

Holy cow, Mike Resnick has been a favourite of mine for at least a decade. And "Travels with My Cats," which I first read in Asimov's when it first came out truly blew my socks off. Though looking at his bibliography I must have read "Elephants on Neptune," first.

I've literally just finished reading "Seven Views of Olduvai Gorge," a couple of days ago. That's tremendous as well, and you can totally see what he means when he says he writes moral fables in that one.

I've read "The Homecoming," too. I didn't like that one quite so much (although I still think it's very good by most people's standards! wotf001 ). Maybe I've just come to expect too much from Mike Freakin' Resnick. wotf004

I don't think it seemed snobby, Krystal--just a matter of different reading habits. wotf007

Since we're on a Mike Resnick diversion, he wrote a couple of how-to books regarding fiction.

1) Putting It Together: Turning Sow's Ear Drafts Into Silk Purse Stories -- in this one he takes his own short stories and shows various drafts and why he revised certain sections, etc. Pretty handy. http://www.amazon.com/dp/1587151758/ref=rdr_ext_sb_ti_hist_2

2) I Have This Nifty Idea...Now What Do I Do With It? -- here he takes not only his books, but other author's book proposals and outlines for novels and how they sold them and further developed them. http://www.amazon.com/Have-This-Nifty-Idea-Now/dp/1587154811/ref=pd_sim_b_1

Mike Resnick is legend. He's won more awards for short fiction than any one. Ever. I think he holds the record for Hugo nominations too. This year's nomination is "The Homecoming"

He's also one of the authors who judge the 8 finalists here in WotF. And he's got an advice column for writers if you wanna learn more about the business: Ask Bwana

Ooooh, THAT Mike Resnick!
No, really, thanks for educating me. wotf008

Nope. Informed. Q1 is done. Watch for the announcement.

And no, I'm not saying.

Just to move it to its proper place... (and to get one last post in on the longest thread ever).

Lol. Can you imagine? The Judges have read through the 8 finalists and decided that none are worthy. Better luck next time.

I'm hoping we get to congratulate some forumites by name soon!

And here I was just reading this open letter about the lack of a Pullitzer winner for fiction.

(Edit: Martin didn't use a smiley as per Evil Martin, so he must be saying sooth.)

Elinor: There are far stranger names stateside. Like "Truth or Consequences, NM" or "Intercourse, PA." What confuses me is all the British place names in unusual climates.

Wasn't there some sort of quote about the sun never setting on the British Empire? All over the map. We have a Russia, OH. And Lima (though pronounced like the bean).
