I've been doing a lot of editing (and writing) recently. Decided last night to ease off the throttle for a day and just enjoy reading. 

So glad I did. Reminded me, in part, why I write.

@jarrodkwilliams I'm still getting familiar with markets. Do you mind telling me what this dream market is, and why it's great?

THE SUPER SECRETS OF WRITING BOOKS ARE ABOUT TO COME OUT!  THIS SPECIAL EDITION IS THE FIRST! I actually consulted with David Farland on one of the chapters in this, and when he read the final he said, "Super cool!" I can't tell you how much I wish he could have been here to see this moment. I feel like a kid graduating from college, but his dad isn't there to see it. At least I did a nice tribute to Dave inside. And put in a good pitch for people to join the Writers of the Future Forum. Let's see if they listen.

(Yeah, I just had to try one of the new pears out. Juicy sweet!)

August check-in! I submitted 1 story, wrote 1 shorter short story (still longer than flash), 1 KYD, and multiple flash fiction stories. For some reason I'm on a flash kick. It's been great because I've been really honing in on openings and endings. There's no room for forgiveness when the story has to be 100 words, under 500 words, or under 1000 words.

I celebrated the Super Secrets coming out at Salt Lake FanX Comic Con this month with a nice bottle of wine with my wife, and completely forgot about the Monday writing prompt! So here it is:

@cweaver it’s the Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction. I’ve read it off and on since I was a teenager and now am a subscriber. It’s a dream to see my work in an issue. I also have a lot of admiration for the editor’s (Sheree Renee Thomas) work.

The Keeper of Records paused outside the dragon’s lair, a niggling worry at the back of his mind. It wasn’t his pending meeting with the Dragon, he’d been working toward that for months now and was excited to learn more of dragon lore. No, it was a premonition that he had forgotten something.

He wracked his brain. He’d written his requirements for the month, submitted to markets and received both rejections and acceptances. He’d watched the bloody scroll as each challenge beasty’s name appeared. The Wulf would be pleased with—

His jaw clenched. Crap. He’d forgotten to send his report.

The Keeper scrambled into his pack, withdrawing parchment, quill and ink. After a hastily scrawled report he dashed into the Dragon’s lair. Hopefully one of the dragonette apprentices would be willing to deliver his report to @wulfmoon. 

It wasn’t how he wanted to start his interview, with a petition, and dragons never offered anything for free, but the report must be sent. Only one month remained in the Super Secrets Challenge and the challenge beasties were holding strong.

I received only the attached message in my inbox and thought, oh dear. The dragon ate the Keeper of Records!   Don't get eaten, my fellow beasties.

Any sales to respected markets? How have the Super Secrets worked for you?

 I agree, she’s a wonderful editor. That is a dream market for me, too. I think they let you submit again 21 days after receiving a rejection, and she said she wants to see more of my work, so I’m counting the days until I can submit there again.

I'm actually trying to get one done. Unfortunately, I'm a little ... well ...

I love writing.

Been working on a KYD from that prompt 'Under the Gun/Pump'. I started it out with the intent of showing a wife going through hardship to demonstrate her love for her husband. About halfway through, the husband became less than honorable and the story quickly spiraled into last-minute ditch at vengeance (that's been really fun to write).

Many things I plot out beforehand, but I do love pantsing some stories and just seeing where they end up.

I'm off to Seattle and then on to Salt Lake FanX Comic Con for my first author guest appearance there! And here's some exciting news from programming!

I've listened to and watched video of this regular feature at FanX for several years. So exciting to be ON the panel this year! And Super Secrets' alumnus Zeet (ZT Bright) will be part of this as well. GO WULF PACK!!!

If I could only get this transporter to work I'd be right there to get your autograph. I was so close to total assembly but the battery on my cordless drill died. Now I'm trying to finish the job by using a flathead screwdriver in a Philips slot, life ain't easy.

@karyenglish periodically puts out posts and advice on how to pass the slush, and we love her for it. Blogger Jarrid Cantway just collected all of her advice in one place for you to read. It’s pretty thorough and he has links to Kary’s original words. I highly recommend everyone read through this, especially if you haven't submitted your Q4 yet. It will help.
