Isaac Asimov created an incredible fool in his Foundation trilogy. Robert Asprin had a hilarious Phule in his Phule’s company series. How about you? What new twists on the banana peel slip can you give to this archetype?

Astronomical event

This one works well for fantasy or science fiction! Isaac Asimov wrote the greatest eclipse story EVER with "Nightfall." Write your best and eclipse the competition!

The Taxman is here!

My novel Death and the Taxman, expanded from my Writers of the Future Volume 39 winning story of the same name, is now available! On Tax Day, of course.   And the Taxman started the day at #5, #6, and #7 in three separate Humor New Release categories!

This story started right here in the Super Secrets Workshop from one of @wulfmoon’s writing prompts: Winning the Rigged Game. Death is the ultimate rigged game, one that the Grim Reaper never loses. But what if he did? What if he became human? Would the Grim Reaper cling to life as tenaciously as we do?

Thanks @lauraholley! I certainly couldn't have done it without the support of the folks right here in the Forum. Or without the Super Secrets. This workshop and challenge was what helped me grow from enthusiastic amateur to published professional.

Hey, Forumites! It’s Release Day! Are you a subscriber to Story Unlikely magazine? It's FREE! And it has over 9000 readers! My story "Last Words" was just published in the May 2024 issue and I’d be sad if you missed it! So, I’m providing you with the link to enjoy a free short read of my work. 😊

Want to know a secret? The editor, Danny Hankner, was a backer of my Kickstarter campaign for my book on writing fiction, HOW TO WRITE A HOWLING GOOD STORY. After he read the book, unbeknownst to me, he told all 9000 of his subscribers it was the best book on writing he's ever read, and then posted a link and told them to buy it! For real! You couldn't ask for a better recommendation. Then he went one more. He read my story "Last Words" that I had used in the book for a manuscript format sample, and he said it was so good, he wanted to buy it. Of course I said yes.

There is history to this story. It is based loosely on my own relationship with my father, focusing on his viewpoint regarding my writing ... and his. Dad really was a successful real estate broker, and he really did have a folder filled with poems, and he pulled it out every time I visited him and asked me what I thought of his latest. And that's where the similarities end. I talk frankly about my relationship with my father regarding writing in chapter 34 in my book. Sometimes, it becomes essential to hide what we do to protect ourselves. But no matter how long you've lived, no matter how long you tell yourself it doesn't matter, deep down you still hope for approval from your parents.

This story was written decades ago, and is the result of me wondering if that day would ever come with my dad, and what would I do if it did?
