Has anyone here tried using AI writing tools? I’ve been exploring a few recently, like Quetext for checking originality and AI detection, and Grammarly for polishing grammar and style. These tools seem to be getting more advanced, but I’m curious about how effective people find them in real writing situations. Do you think they genuinely help improve writing, or do they sometimes make it feel less authentic? I’d love to hear your experiences and opinions on which tools are worth using.

Nope, I avoid them like the plague.

Although, I have used the free basic Grammarly plug-in for MS Word. I helps find misspelled a words or forgot a period, but it isn't very smart (keeps trying to shove commas in where they shouldn't be).  Sticking with standard MS Word spell checker seems the best way to go.

@toddjones But there will be few or maybe many students who use AI tools to write whole assignments and I have tried them. Manually it is almost impossible for us to understand difference from a human written assignment.

Since AI cannot generate thoughts, ideas, and writings on its own (it simply pulls bits and pieces from other works already in existence out on the internet), this is a very devious form of plagiarism in my humble opinion. It's not something I would ever use. Then again, I also recognize that "kids today" are guided by a different set of moral compasses from my own. To each his own, but I still consider AI to be a precursor to Skynet's T-800, and I ain't helping that thing get any smarter.

May need to start making videos of us writing, like video game players do.

Watch "King of Kong" doco movie for entertaining examples.

Although most writers wouldn't like being filmed, you could cover up with a monster mask or what have you.

Judges could see their hands typing/writing and the words appearing.

Not always convenient, but if we submitted at least 15min of solid writing, perhaps.

Not an ideal thing, but one possible solution.

Information being too available, spell checkers being too prolific, and autocorrect being too helpful is contributing to humans becoming dumber. Well, lazier.

I can tell that my brain (yes, being nearly 55 may have something do to with it to) can't come up with correct spelling, definitions, or answers as quick as it used to. I attribute this to all the spelling and autocorrect AI stuff.

I'm concerned over how this impacts decision making in high-stress, no AI available situations. First step, using AI to help spell. Second step, using AI to finish thoughts. Next step, using AI to think for us. Augh!

soapbox

We just had to sit through a whole training session at work on how to use Copilot. "Look at all the great things it can do for you! Such a time saver!"

Great. So now when I get all my work done by noon, I can leave early and enjoy my life, right?

"Silly, silly man! No! Now you can just do MORE!"

No thanks.

Its a definite bubble.

The thing most people don't realise is AI is based in reality.

Its like the notion of "physical media", even non "physical" media actually exists somewhere for you to access.

With AI, we are talking huge expensive data centres that use loads of power and water and land and are are already infringing on the rights of local residents.

AI is between a rock and a hard place. Plus a few other tough objects.

There have been many wizz bang inventions that have failed over the years, it wouldn't be new for that.

Take the original electric cars, for example. I also saw some flash Harry 3d printer that made wee things in a few seconds, went belly up.

The only way I can see AI succeeding, is if they stop people using it for nonsense, as good as those Evis in (incert movie or TV show here) are, and only use it for sensible, needed work.

Then you would already have enough data centres and we can all get on with out lives.

Hopefully they will make some new chips soon that mean less space is needed.

Though I can see kids of the future sneaking into old derelict dead data centres with their electric go carts and zipping around the decaying stacks of gubbins.

(Prior apologies to the judges next quarter)

Also the new Neo robot is mostly remote control, by the sound of it.

I think that's the logical direction for robots, not ai. So the writing may be on the wall.

I use ProWritingAid's Word plugin to only check for spelling, punctuation, grammar, and passive voice. PWA did this for years before the so called "AI" chatbots became a thing. I do not use any of the GenAI functions that it has. I've disabled the CoPilot functionality in Word as well.

<steps onto soapbox>

In regards to using GenAI tools for writing, in my opinion, you either want to be a writer or you don't. I want to tell stories - the most important word there is I. If the tools are doing the writing, then I'm not doing it, so what's the ******* point.

I agree.

However, everything we write is already predetermined to some extent. At least for successful stories.

I'm still getting to grips with things, but it's obvious, certainly in film/tv that everything is the same.

Algorithm (Sistine chapel 9+all in one, aka Genesis), fractal, chiasmus.

I'm not seeing much beyond that.

Already seems pretty AI.

Films that play identical to each other. To crazy extents.

AI quirks are already there.

Hammond in the naughty corner. Elle mumbling nonsense behind Muldoon. Tim playing the robot and grabbing the egg shell, that Alan quickly replaces...

At least Spielberg got fingers right.

WARNING: Avoid this rabbit hole, it will consume you.
