Hi, I'm Ryne. Just submitted my second entry. My last won an honorable mention.
So, a quick question: with my most recent entry, I was in a rush and I made the stupid mistake of forgetting the headers (title and page numbers) as well as forgetting to double space. Does anyone know if this means an automatic disqualification, or if there is any leeway?
Thanks!
I may have done that with my Q2 tale. I always do it but when I went back to the file to get it ready to send out to someone else. No Headers! Oh, oh. Maybe that is why my rejection was one of the first of the first batch this time, even though nothing was said about breaking the rules in the rejection.

Hello! I am Rae. I submitted to Q3 (the last one, is that right?). I specialize in speculative/paranormal horror. I didn't know that there was a forum until I watched the 29th award ceremony earlier today. I hope to learn a lot from this experience!
Hi Rae,
Welcome to the forum. Glad to have you with us.
We're pretty friendly here, so just jump in and enjoy yourself.

Hi, Rae and Ryne, and anyone else I missed!
Ryne: I don't think you need to worry. The contest takes a very broad approach to formatting. So long as it's easily legible, you should be fine.

My name is Connie and I am a biblioholic. I work in a bookstore and read so much I'm under the delusion that maybe I can write, too.

Welcome, Connie! Reading is an important part of writing.
My children and wife are lucky I work in a library where I don't have to pay for all these books...

Hello everyone. I registered yesterday and I'm making my first post today.
I've been writing songs since I was a young man and recently realized they're really really short stories.
Now I'm learning to write longer ones and loving the journey.
I was the kid in class who hid the book I wanted to read behind the one the teacher wanted me to read.
Ever been hit on the head with a ruler? Ouch.
It took me a while but I know now I love to write as much as I love to read, so happy to find ya'll.

My name is Erin Green! I've been writing ever since I was born haha not really, but I've been writing stories as long as I can remember. I'm 16. I've recently finished a novel and was attempting to self-publish it. This'll be my very first time entering this contest. My friend suggested it to me.
So anyways, that's me.
Welcome Erin, and congrats on getting an early start. Good luck!

Welcome Erin! It's great that you're starting to get serious while you're still young. Don't ever lose that drive and no matter what this business throws at you, always keep moving forward.
PS. Nice signature.
Hi everyone! I'm excited to be here and hope to start submitting to the contest. I met a bunch of cool WotF folks at WorldCon last week who nudged me over to these forums

Hello all... My name is Ariel Berdon and I am 20 years old. I have not entered the contest yet, and am a little nervous about being here with you all experienced writers, but I have to start somewhere! I love reading the WotF books that come out from the winners every year, but have yet to try my hand at it personally... I have written some poems here and there, and started a multitude of stories that do not have middles or endings.
I started college in April 2012, where apparently in the first year for any degree, knowing how to write is very important. I did 3 classes JUST on writing APA style research papers, where my creative writing significantly improved. This has made me more confident in trying to write my stories again.
Any advice or personal experiences in writing would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Ariel
Welcome Karen, Erin, and Ariel. I've only recently discovered this forum myself and now visit daily. Lot's of good stuff to be learned here. Ariel, in the last two weeks I finally crossed the hurdle you're talking about, finishing a story. I had so many starts and no endings. I finally took one story and stayed with it until the only thing left to write was The End.

Welcome Ariel,
You found the right place to learn about writing! This forum is a goldmine. You might try subscribing to David Farland's Daily Kicks too. He's the judge of the contest, and his website (just google his name), is chock full of great advice for writers.
The main advice all the pros give, however, can be summed up in one word: Write! Just keep writing and the more you write, the better you'll get. Once you get a few finished stories under your belt, you'll begin to notice your own improvement. Just keep writing, keep submitting and don't give up! Good luck entering the contest!
