@jeschleicher YES! Was this the story I've seen? I knew you had success in your future when I read it, either with it or any other words you put together on a page. So so psyched for you.

Congratulations to you!!! Yay! ❤️?

I made HM so I’m happy. It’s improvement from my first entry last quarter.

Congratulations to everyone! ?

Thursday has arrived in my inbox. ?

It was my first entry so I'm curious to see if "your story did not place" means R, or just not one of the finalists.

This was what I received too for my first entry. Funny thing was, I loved the story very much. But in hindsight, since it’s been eight months later, I can now see a bit of the changes I need to make and such. I understand now why it was rejected.

Don’t give up. Your next one could be an honorable mention or even higher. We don’t know what height we can soar if we only think that being off the ground means we’re flying. Nope. Let’s continue going up and reach beyond the stars!

Good luck to your next entry! May it place so you can also get a certificate. ?

I woke up this afternoon (I work nights) and my wife brought me coffee as well as news that the emails were starting to arrive. I felt a thunderstrike of that curious and now familiar mix of excitement-laced dread.  My last couple entries were straight R's, so I was bracing for the worst; Doing my best to hold the head high, chin-up-and-carry-on sort of thing.

Dreading another R, hoping an HM, yearning for an SHM, and aching for something beyond.

This time, it seems, it was to be a beyond! sunny

It's a good thing I work nights, because I don't think I'd be sleeping at all tonight!

semi

Congratulations! ??

Congratulations to everyone who placed, and to those who finished a story and submitted. Most of us have, or will, get Rs or RWCs, it's part of the journey, though it doesn't mean it isn't disappointing. Chin up, bum on seat, and start writing the next story.

Huge congratulations, MountainSpud! Something we all aspire to!

hm

For me, I took a previous HM and reworked it, using lots of advice. And it improved to ... HM again. Makes me go hmmm. That's five HMs, and I'd been hoping for improvement. On the other hand, I also know that HM means each of those stories was in the top 10-15% of thousands of entries. That feels pretty good.

RWC for me. Not the result I was hoping for, obviously.

I noticed a new way to be rejected in their list I hadn't seen before: Reality check: Your plot or character behavior is wildly implausible, so much that it stopped us dead. This doesn’t mean that magic can’t exist. It means that a character in danger of losing his life isn’t going to philosophize about unrelated subjects for sixteen pages. Is the reward for fulfilling the quest ridiculously small or entirely pointless? Characters don’t work against their own self-interest. Even self-sacrifice fulfills some inner need. Look at your plot from the point of view of a stranger. Would a reasonable being act that way?

Anyway, commiserations to my fellow RWCs + Rs + DQs. It sucks. As for me, I'll get back on the horse after I lick my wounds and rethink my magic systems.

Congrats to the HMs, the SHMs, the SFs [I see at least 2 of these posting in the forum and/or elsewhere], and of course the finalists who are anxiously waiting on that second call [at least 1 posted on the forum]... may your second call be what you hope for! but if not, you should be proud of your result as you are on your way to either winning or pro-ing out [or both].

WOTF results:
Vol 42: Q1 SHM, Q2 pending, Q3 ?
running totals to date:
WOTF: 6 Rs, 3 RWCs, 8 HMs, 1 SHM
IOTF: 4 Rs, 3 HMs

I've missed being able to root for the forum's Finalists each quarter recently-

Thank You!! & I asked Joni when she called (Friday) about any gag order, and she said not to tell anyone beforehand to keep her from being inundated with a flood of emails on their results, an understandable request given the tireless work she does to make this contest shine the way it does.

@chwalter I know how that feels, but I'm sure you will keep writing - and then you'll get those HM, SHM, finalist, and eventually a win, there's no telling what will happen if you don't quit.
