I think computers can sense when you're on a deadline, because I was working on my last few edits yesterday and my document kept crashing until I had lost hours of work. Maddening.

But that doesn't mean they're smart - if I'm working on it, it means I'm on a deadline ?

@martin-l-shoemaker oh no, dare I ask? What happened?
That was the quarter that K.D. Wentworth (then the Coordinating Judge) passed away in the middle of judging. She had picked one Finalist, but that was of course a secret. Other than that, results were unknown.
In the middle of their grief, the Contest staff had to find a new Coordinating Judge (Dave) and bring him up to speed. Dave had been Coordinating Judge before, so it wasn’t a complete reboot, but it was close to starting over.
So none of us on the Forum knew anything. Some of us were friends of K.D., so they were grieving, too. So we had to support each other through a lot. The V29Q1 thread became a rallying point/support group, a real bonding experience.
it also became The Thread That Never Ends. We didn’t get Q1 results until July.

A traumatizing reminder of that one time a paper of mine vanished without a trace after a 36-hour straight writing binge! Computer didn't even crash, the document just vanished. We're worried about AI taking over the world when we should be worried it'll just troll us for fun.

So, what you're saying is that you fear AI will become indistinguishable from half of Facebook?
Half? I think you might need to recalculate. You're giving social media far too much credit ?

@krqueen_writes I've become complacent in my trust of the cloud to save my work; I remember BITD we'd obsessively save our work to floppy drives. 36 hours of work tho? Holy hell. I'd legit burn something. Probably myself.

Augh. That is maddening.
I have learned that if you are using MS Word/Excel locally and your PC crashes, there is a copy it auto saves in your tmp folder. I've saved many a co-worker hours of work helping them find that doc they've been working on. You can google how to find it for the folder.

What encouragement to hear so many positive comments about third submissions! I just sent my third in yesterday. It's a re-working of an idea I jotted down in a Leisure Learning writing class I took 25 years ago. I discovered the notebook containing my initial version in September while debriding my desk and thought of a better ending. It's actually a great relief to be done with it finally.

I confess I've binged Stardew Valley during the holidays so I'm starting a story for this quarter last minute. There's a lesson in here somewhere about procrastination, but I have no regrets ?

Whew. Have I really been silent here since the last day of the last quarter? Life does get full sometimes. Been working on this submission (one way or another) all quarter, and finally pushed it to completion. Thirteen hours remaining, no sweat, right?
Now to go read some writing advice articles from Wulf Moon and Joni Fisher. (Wait. Maybe I should have read those articles before submitting? Well, there's always next quarter!)

Thanks to an encouraging writers group, I submitted my piece! I told them my goal was to submit one every quarter and they're holding me to it! I'm really glad I did. After a flurry of writing I produced something I'm only half-way embarrassed to share. I'd call it a success!
On to next quarter's story!
Good luck everyone!
