Finally! I didn't think I'd make it this time. The story I worked on for weeks wasn't coming together. On Monday I decided to ditch it and start a new story. A few times I almost gave up, but I glad I didn't. I really like this one. I read the first five pages to my critique group last night, but that's the only feedback I got on it. Fingers and toes crossed. Good luck everyone.
If you're still working, keep going. There's still time.
Write without fear.
Edit without mercy.

Straggler? Okay, perhaps. But it's in now, with five hours to spare. And it's my bedtime here in EDT.
Interestingly, I was doing some edits to comments from my local f2f group. Good writers, good people. I had taken a different approach on this story, trying to match some of the aspects that I see in WotF published winners, style issues I don't usually use. Go with the winners, right? So two of the readers in my local group thought those new aspects shouldn't be in the story at all. (Others of my readers loved them.) Hence the subjectivity of ANY review!

I'll submit it somewhere else come October.
October? Optimist!
I did my research. That's when the last several Q3 results have been released.
Or do you mean dqs and stuff come out earlier? I didn't know that was the case. People don't tend to post those in the forum.

Stragglers? Who's a straggler? What, just because I'm still editing/improving my story on the last day? This is sort of like merging on the highway prior to a lane closure. No need to merge until you get to the orange cones, right?
This is how I usually do it, Doc.

So... my wife and I had our first baby in April, and I just haven't had time to finish my story for the quarter... the baby is wonderful, but ye gods, fatherhood has devoured by time to sit at the keyboard.
I do however have a prior honorable mention story that I've changed the ending of based on feedback.
I'm hazy, how much does a story need to change to be resubmitted? It didn't make finalist, so it's still good there.

It doesn't need to be changed at all--Joni has even spoken about people submitting unchanged prior entries at times, so it's not just acceptable, it's encouraged rather than not submitting. And sometimes, a changed ending may be enough to dramatically change the story's impact, so it's worth a try--get in before the window closes!

Here is another post from Kary English, our first reader. You might scan through some of the points that could help, specifically the section on RWC (Rejected With Comments).
I'm in! I really thought I wouldn't make it this quarter but the God of Flow States must have been on my side since I wrote more than half the story today alone. Now it's twitching time.

Thanks guys - got it in!
I remember being told my unselected finalist story can't be resubmitted, but happy my honorable mentions can help make sure I get something entered while I polish this story for the next quarter!

Ok, I'm in with two minutes to spare. I kept falling asleep so the last bit may have a few typos and mispellings and stuff. I like the story though. Good luck everyone!

Way too early to start twitching. I'd be a mass of twitches by the time another three months passed. I can just imagine it, nothing left of me but a 200-pound pile of biological bits squirming, squeaking, and jittering around on the floor. Uck.

@wilsontd I had the same problem. I decided my first story was awful, so started a 2nd one. Then I decided the second story was awful too. I went back to the first story and it wasn't as bad as I thought, so I finished it. The 2nd one isn't that bad either, so I will finish that for the next quarter. I have a percolation issue. I always think whatever I'm writing is awful, but then after percolating, it doesn't look that bad and I can finish.

V40 Q1 SHM; will these torments never end?!! It was a great story!
V40 Q2 SHM Now this is getting silly. I write a definite YA winning story and it only gets SHM. Perhaps I should edit my online history...
V40 Q3 I'm guessing either SHM or RWC...
Have decided am going for the record number of RWCs! 2 out of 3 so far...

Tomorrow is Thursday, but I'm guessing it's too soon to hope for results back yet on Q3...? LOL October probably, which is a very long row to hoe.
HM for Q2, but I liked my Q3 story more, so I'm hoping for, I dunno, at least Silver maybe. I don't have one of those yet, so it would be cool to add to my collection. Then again, as much as I liked my Q3, I'm even more excited now for my current WIP for Q4.
I don't know what gets me more jazzed — waiting to hear results from the prior quarter, or waiting to submit for the next quarter. I'm always thinking, "Yeah, but wait til she sees THIS one!"

I liked my Q2 story better than my Q3 story. My Q2 story only rose as high as HM, so... My goal is to put everything I can into writing the best story possible for Q4.
WOTF results:
Vol 41: Q1 HM, Q2 HM, Q4 HM
running totals to date:
WOTF: 6 Rs, 3 RWCs. 8 HMs
IOTF: 4 Rs, 3 HMs

I dunno, at least Silver maybe. I don't have one of those yet, so it would be cool to add to my collection.
I'm in the same boat Morgan. My goal is to place higher than HM. I feel really good about the story I'm working on at this time.

@physa I liked *my* Q2 better than my Q3 too! I also had thought my Q2 was more WotF appropriate so likely that means my Q3 will sink 🙁 Ho hum. All I can say was the Q3 was polished/edited better, and whatever it gets, it gets - I don't think there's much I could/would imagine to change my current Q3 as a re-sub later, so if it's doa at WotF this quarter it will get sent to other markets not resubmitted to wotf. Trying hard to focus on Q4...

I've got five Q3 results recorded for myself, and 3 of those fall in the span of a week, from the last few days of September to the first handful of October. So that doesn't seem like too long a shot...
