OMG all! What a stellar set of results. I don't think I've ever seen we forumites get such a high percentage of HMs and above.
To those who got the dreaded Rs and RWCs, we stand with you. Almost every one of us has been there. I know I have. The only way is up! If you got an RWC and are not sure why I'll happily take a look and see if I can work it out.
And to those who hit new heights, bloody well done. You're on the right trajectory. Keep submitting every quarter and you will get there.
To everyone who submitted, regardless of result,

It was an RWC for me this time around.
It was a good story, but it definitely took its time getting to the speculative element and I think that's maybe what did it in. No worries though; my current WIP definitely doesn't have that problem, so onward and upward!
R- 1 or 2. Or 3. Possibly 25.

@cedars and @craydimensional. Don't give up on your RWC. My Q4 was an RWC last quarter. I asked others in the forum for help and was able to identify what was wrong and fix. (there was a lot wrong with mine, but I just didn't see it until others helped point it out.)

I'm really happy with the HM with my Q4 story as it shows my recent revision has taken the story in the correct direction. Last year I had some personal feedback from the editor at "Escape Pod" and it took me a long time to figure out how to incorporate it. If it helps, this is the comment I received: "This story had some interesting ideas, but we wanted more focus on characterization and stakes, and a stronger balance of story to exposition."

@mgamblesee I can certainly vouch for the magic dust of this place. I started with an R and an RWC and somehow along the way, my average has slowly risen as, as if by osmosis, i absorbed facts, pointers and ideas here (the free online workshop, moons 100+ tips thread, martins opinion thread, plus the general posts and crit-exchanges). I'm def still learning, but I think we all are

Coming in here shame-faced (again) with a DQ. While making a last-minute submission, I inadvertently left my byline on the story. (Sheesh!) I even have that on my list of final checkpoints, and took the care to remove the headers, but...
I did this once before in my four years of submitting here. You'd think I could learn. Sigh.
On the other hand, I certainly congratulation all of you who submitted, particularly those who did better than before. And VERY particularly those who were bold enough (with heart in throat) to submit for the first time.

Thanks @gideonpsmith! I enjoyed the online workshop. I'm going to start working my way through Moon's tips next. What do you think was the biggest change you made in your submissions from your first two entries to your first SHM in 2023? Was it the same story that you kept improving? Or something new each time?

@mgamblesee biggest thing was having people here read my pieces and crit them and doing that in return. WOTF is a specific market so my crit readers from elsewhere were not pointing out *why* the stories werent right for this specific market.
All my stories so far have been new stories, new experiments. I am not against resubmitting but so far have not had a piece that i felt i knew how to make a big enough change to to change its rating.
