Hi,
Rule 11 says: "Winners are ineligible to make further entries in the Contest."
What exactly counts as a winner? Are honorable mentions and silver honorable mentions considered winners? Are the top 3 all winners and no longer eligible to submit? Or is only the ONE grand winner the winner, and anyone else recognized can still enter?
Thanks!

Dear @pegeen,
Winners are the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners of each quarter. The contest runs 4 quarterly cycles:
Oct 1 - Dec 31
Jan 1 - March 31
April 1 - June 30
July 1 - Sep 30
You will see in the forum they are refereed to as Q2 Volume 40, or a a cycle number of 40B.
Each year there is a new volume published.
We are currently in the 2nd quarter of volume 40. (40B)
All other status don't disqualify you from entering again.
Good luck!

This section of the rules confused me too.
If I haven't sold anything (so I meet the professional sales rule), and place in the "And the winners are:" (1, 2, or 3rd) in Q1, then:
- I can't enter for the remaining quarters for that year?
- OR
- I can't enter WotF ever again

@toddjones Rule 11 is pretty cut and dry about that: "Winners are ineligible to make further entries in the Contest."
If you win, you can't ever enter again. If you win, you've won the prize, you're going to the workshop, let someone else have a chance! ?

It must really suck to win 1st, 2nd, or 3rd the first time you enter. I wonder if that's ever happened before?

It absolutely has. And I'm pretty sure it doesn't suck to win it, whether it's at the first try or the fiftieth! The prize offered for placing in the Writers of the Future is one of the best, if not the absolute best overall winning package of any writing contest out there.

??
No, that would not suck. Not at all. Winning would mean going to the workshop and meeting the many wonderful contacts that gather - not to mention Hollywood!
It has happened before that folk have won in one submission, yes.
In any case, there is always so much to do afterward!

@doctorjest To miss the journey, that would suck. Yet, I suppose if someone wins on their first try, they already did the journey somewhere else.

I imagine the journey may be different for everyone, depending on their writing goals. Some may only want to win the contest and be done. Some may want to go on to other publications, then be done. Some may want to only be a hobby writer. Some may want to publish novels. Some may want to continue on as a professional writer and make a living of it. This writing adventure journey could be as short as a year or as long as a lifetime! Kinda cool, eh?

@Jason Speaking of which...have you heard anything on the grape vine yet as to when the listing of winners and HM's will come out online ?...
@jose77sanchez Usually the list comes out the week following email notifications.

@toddjones Yeah, I saw it ! My name was on the HM list ( "up in lights" ) figuratively speaking. I think that out of 106, I was listed as the 82nd name. Does that mean I came out in 82nd place ? No right ? Just a crazy thought of mine...

So, I think that I've looked into seeing if the list was in alphabetic order and it doesn't seem that way. But , I'll have a second look at it. I think that the HM list really doesn't take your name or number into any serious consideration-UNLESS you score a Finalist or other more significant category.
@jose77sanchez If you take a closer look you'll see they are alphabetized by last name.

I'll check it out. Thanks.

So, you are right ! I just checked and the names ARE in alphabetical order. And that's GREAT news ! Now, I no longer have to thumb down a long list to see IF I've won. I just go to the last names and take it from there. I appreciate your feedback so much on this. Its made my struggle to know a lot easier. Hopefully one day, I can finally win. Even if it's 2nd or even 3rd place in the Illustrator's part of the competition.
@jose77sanchez No problem, in a quick glance it's easy to miss as the first names are listed first. Good luck with your future submissions!
Wow I thought rule 11 only meant you weren't eligible anymore to make further entries in the contest that year, not indefinitely. I mean getting to second or third place would be amazing ofcourse, but speaking as a notorious silver/bronze medalist in other competitions, I would also be sad not to be able to compete for that grand prize anymore

I can publicly say this much. Jody is heavily involved in DragonCon. She wanted to finish her judging in time for that. Assume she will.

@tiinag and not only that but a few quarters ago ANOTHER Jose Sanchez won in the Illustrator's contest and when I first saw my name, I almost flew through the roof BUT it turned out that it was somebody else. So I was definitely not happy about that. Keep in mind that I've been at this since roughly the summer of 1998 when Rachel Denk was the Contest Coordinator and only black & white submissions were accepted. NO color back then.
