So. There it is. And for those of you doing my KYD challenge, if this doesn't stir you, you can always choose to take your chances and roll the bones using a d100 on the prompt list in either of my two Super Secrets' of Writing books! Just remember, whatever prompt comes up, you have to MAKE IT WORK. You don't get another roll. That's what makes this challenging. And what stretches your writing abilities!

I received my trade paperback proof of HOW TO WRITE A HOWLING GOOD STORY from my publisher, Mark Lefebvre of Stark Publishing. Feels good to finally hold the book in my hands. At 100,000 words, thirty-six chapters, and 328 total pages, it's a big book!

This is cool! Did this one prompt Musik Man?

No, but it certainly could have! I wrote “Muzik Man” that was published in The Best of Deep Magic Anthology Two close to thirty years ago. This is one of those stories I never gave up on, waiting for new pro markets to send it to.

And here is why you should not give up on your stories, even your old ones. I sold it to Deep Magic magazine the day I returned from the WotF workshop from our winners week. It went on to win Best Science Fiction and Fantasy Short Story for the year in the Critters Readers’ Choice Awards—thousands vote in that. Tangent Online reviewed it, and likened my plot to the power of Star Wars. It also earned a star on Tangent’s Year End Reading List. And later, Deep Magic’s entire staff, including first readers, chose the very best from several years of issues for their second Best of DM anthology, and picked “Muzik Man” to be in it.

Don’t give up on your stories. New markets open all the time. If you put them on your blog or website, you lose first rights to publish, and that’s what publishers are paying you for.

My advice. But it has worked exceedingly well for me, and not just with this story. ?
